March 1956 finds Tokyo in a delicate state of rebirth, a city still nursing the wounds of war a decade later. Private detective Reiji Tokisaka's life takes an unexpected turn during a routine visit to Inokashira Park, where a mysterious young woman approaches him with a peculiar request. "I want you to find something... Me. My true self." This enigmatic encounter sets in motion a chain of events that will test Tokisaka's investigative skills to their absolute limits.
The city finds itself gripped by terror as a series of brutal murders targets young women. Each victim suffers the same grotesque fate - kidnapped, murdered, and discovered with both a body part and uterus surgically removed. Tokisaka's childhood friend, Sergeant Uozumi, pulls him into the official investigation, hoping his unique perspective might crack the case. Meanwhile, at Oba Girls' Academy where Tokisaka's younger sister studies, two students have vanished under mysterious circumstances, prompting Vice Principal Tokio Saeki to seek the detective's help.
Tokisaka finds himself juggling three separate but potentially connected cases. With the vice principal's approval, he goes undercover as a teacher at the academy, hoping to uncover clues about the missing students. It's there he encounters Toko Kuchiki again - the same girl from the park, whose bell-like voice contrasts sharply with her casual manner of speaking. "Heya. Figured I'd be seeing you soon, Detective."
As the investigation progresses, the body count rises and simple answers prove elusive. The numbers don't add up - more disappearances than identified victims. Each discovery raises more questions than answers. The key to breaking this cycle of tragedy might lie buried in a cold case from six years earlier, while the solution to cracking this woeful world's shell could be hidden in one girl's innocent smile.
